EMBASSIES, government offices and newspapers were spammed with complaints after a tidal wave of job applications crashed the Tourism Queensland computer server yesterday.

Hopeful applicants for "the best job in the world" -- a $150,000, six-month caretaker's job on Hamilton Island, launched as a viral marketing campaign to promote the Whitsundays -- panicked that they could not post their video applications on the crashed site.

"My name is Andr (CORRECT) Tramontin, and I'm a 21 years old boy who lives in Brazil," one emailed The Australian yesterday. "I couldn't find any link where I could apply for this job, and I also called to the Australian embassy in Brazilia, and they weren't able to tell me something about it."

Briton Neil Patrick pleaded: "Please help ... I'm stuck in England in the cold and I saw the advert for caretaker at the Great Barrier Reef.

"I can swim, use a computer, no wifey or children commitments, so I'm perfect but I can't find where to apply."

A spokesman for Queensland Tourism Minister Desley Boyle yesterday said a second server had to be set up after thousands of people tried to post applications simultaneously, crashing the site.

"It's insane, but it's drumming up interest and people are talking."
